Community Recognition Program Policy
Purpose
BVA maintains a Community Recognition Program to acknowledge sustained and exceptional contributions by its members. The program exists to reinforce positive contribution, preserve institutional history, and strengthen morale within the community. Recognition under this program is discretionary and reflects meaningful impact over time.
Program Components
The Community Recognition Program consists of:
- BVA Legacy List
- Member of the Year
Each serves a distinct purpose.
BVA Legacy List
Definition
The BVA Legacy List honors individuals whose sustained contributions have had a lasting and meaningful impact on the community. Legacy recognition may include controllers or pilots whose efforts significantly shaped BVA over time.
Purpose
The Legacy List exists to:
- Preserve our history
- Honor long-term dedication
- Recognize significant contributors for lasting impact
Legacy List additions:
- Are made at the discretion of the Administration Team
- Do not occur on a fixed schedule
- Are not guaranteed annually or periodically
Legacy recognition is permanent and non-competitive.
Relationship to VATUSA C3
Where a Legacy-recognized controller meets VATUSA eligibility requirements for the C3 (Senior Controller) designation, the Administration Team may submit a nomination in accordance with divisional policy. If a controller does not meet eligibility requirements at the time of Legacy recognition, they remain on the Legacy List. Should they later meet the applicable requirements, the Administration Team may consider submitting a C3 nomination at that time. Meeting eligibility does not imply automatic nomination, and any submission remains discretionary. C3 designation, where applicable, is considered an administrative extension of Legacy recognition and does not constitute a separate recognition program within BVA.
Member of the Year
Definition
Member of the Year recognizes an individual who demonstrates exceptional contribution during a single calendar year.
This recognition is open to all BVA members, including controllers and non-controllers.
Purpose
This award exists to:
- Reinforce outstanding annual contribution
- Encourage mentorship, professionalism, and operational excellence
- Recognize members who are making meaningful impact within a given year
Monetary Contributions
BVA is grateful for the financial support provided by members. Monetary donations play an important role in sustaining and improving the organization. However, recognition under this program is not awarded solely on the basis of financial contribution. While members who contribute monetarily and in other meaningful ways may certainly be considered, donations alone do not constitute grounds for nomination. The Community Recognition Program is based on sustained and meaningful impact, not financial contribution.
Recognition Process & Expectations
Recognition originates from internal Administration Team discussion and review. Nominations are not requested or solicited from members, and there is no application process. Because recognition is based on qualitative assessment of sustained or exceptional contribution, selections are not subject to appeals or grievances. The absence of recognition should not be interpreted as a negative evaluation, but rather as a reflection of the discretionary and selective nature of the program. The intent of the program is to celebrate meaningful contribution, not to create competition or progression milestones.
