Some of you may have noticed that you haven't been receiving the usual text Event Reminders. This was because the service we were previously using to send those text message updates was discontinued, without any notice given to BVA. Good news, though, is that we found a new provider for this service, and it will be the same price as the old service -- free! The provider is Remind (http://www.remind.com). While the service is meant primarily for schools, we have been given permission to take advantage of the fantastic services they offer. Unfortunately, we are not able to move all of the subscribers from the old service to the new one, so you will need to resubscribe if you would like to continue receiving BVA event updates via text message. To get BVA event reminders texted to your phone please text '@BVATC' to 81010. After doing that, you will then be asked for your name. Please reply with your BVA username. If you do not reply with your username, the system will not add you to the list. BVA is not able to see your phone number. Neither BVA nor Remind charges you for receiving these messages, although standard messaging rates from your carrier may apply if you are normally charged to receive text messages. Thanks!

Looks to be a challenging event for sure! So far you have yet to disappoint.

Buy a Shirt to Support BVA and the New England Air Museum
Tom Guerrette replied to Tom Guerrette's topic in Announcements
We're off to a good start so far! Remember, we need to sell 20 shirts for them to be printed. Buy one for yourself, your parents, brother, sister, cousin, anyone who might wear the shirt! -
BVA and the New England Air Museum (NEAM) have teamed up to bring you Jet Fuel: a fundraising campaign to help support two great aviation organizations. From now until June 14, including during Flight SimCon, buy a Jet Fuel T-shirt to generate funds for Boston Virtual ATC and NEAM. As you know, BVA relies entirely on donations from our members to fund our operations. We hope you will consider the value that BVA brings to you on a regular basis and make a contribution to our Jet Fuel campaign to fund our server’s future sustainability. Each shirt sells for $20; all proceeds will be split evenly between BVA and the New England Air Museum. There is also a $5 shipping charge per order (independent of the number of shirts). T-Shirts can be purchased online at http://www.booster.com/jetfuel. T-shirts will be printed as long as we sell at least 20 before June 14, and then will be delivered in early July. Convince your parents, friends, spouse, and anyone else you know to buy a shirt too and help raise money for these two great organizations! Shirts purchased online can be shipped to addresses within the United States. If you would like your shirt delivered to another country, please contact us at [email protected].

The judges could access the information.

I'd be happy to let you guys use Cape Air's VAFS to track the landing FPM if the judges would like, even if it's just supplementing your visual judging of the landing.
-
I think the first two criteria are certainly reasonable ways to judge the landing, provided everyone has BVA's version of Nantucket. However, deciding how hard/soft the landing was is certainly something that can present some challenges, as aforementioned by Cameron and Devon. How do you plan on judging how soft/hard someones landing is, just by watching it (which can work, to a certain extent)?

Welcome! There is no policy against newbies -- or anyone -- starting a topic about anything they feel is relevant! Pleased to see you enjoyed your first flight with us. If you look at the ATC Timetable you will see that we have controllers lined up for the Boston Area tonight and tomorrow night. Hope to see you there!

Probably wouldn't need Clearance at the arrival airport if it's going to be mostly arrivals. In addition, you can't force people to depart/not depart from a certain area. If the event is a KMIA and someone wants to fly there from KPBI, while it wouldn't be preferred -- we can't tell them they can't fly from KPBI.
-
Building on that idea, I think it could be where you assign one country/outlying territory, then have it go into the selected airport. For example, the assigned airport could be KBOI, and you could assign it to where you could only fly in from a Canadian airport. Or, the airport could be KEYW, and you could only fly in from the Carribean. Wouldn't that defeat the 'long haul' part? Caribbean - KEYW really isn't that far.

That's certainly an interesting idea for an event. What is the goal of the event? Is the goal to get everyone landing at the 'destination' airport at the same time? The "Overload" in the title makes it seem like there will be a 'traffic overload'. If that's the case, it would make the event a bit logistically complicated because pilots would have to time their flights to arrive within a certain time to get the "overload" factor. I don't think having the airport staffed the entire day would be practical from a traffic perspective (I also think it would be difficult to find controllers to staff it for an entire day). Three to five hours is a bit more practical. I'm sure this will be appreciated by long haul pilots -- however, it's not much different then them using the ATC Timetable (which is very accurate) to determine where to fly to to get ATC services, and usually lots of other traffic of varying types (short-haul, GA, etc), adding to the realism factor. I think it's an interesting idea but needs to be a bit more unique -- and more appealing to people that don't fly long-hauls.

This sounds like a good question for next weeks website poll. (Whether or not people like the double plays)

Today, Southwest Airlines/AirTran Airways officially received a single operating certificate from the FAA. From now on, all flights will be operated with the Southwest Callsign (WN/SWA/Southwest). For all you Citrus fans, your going to have to get used to saying "Southwest". http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... 05008.html

If this keeps going on, all where going to have left is one big Legacy carrier, and one big Low-Cost carrier. Who will win? (I really hope the government doesn't let that happen).
-
As of Wednesday, the COA - Continental call sign is official defunct, as UAL and COA now operate under one operating certificate. All flights are operated under the United Airlines call sign of "United". See the article below: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Pilots-Un ... 51129.html

We could do what UALR did to PQI (Dan should remember) to TEX one night. That might be fun.
-
Evan, you have that Geteway marked on the Events calender as November 4-13. Should that be fixed to say December 4-13?
-
I think the last time did SoCal was last summer or something...can't remember perfectly. While I didn't like it personally, I know many people did, so I'd be willing to go back to Cali.

Thank You, Dan, Andrew, and Evan for staying up so late to work on this Scenery. Your hard work is appreciated. Have fun in the event tonight!

We had a storm like this last year that effected the Cape, Long Island, Connecticut, and the rest of New England. To my recollection it was an interesting couple of evenings -- full of high winds, rain, lightning, and busy controllers! I don't think this will be the last storm to pay us a visit, especially since this is the first one to reach hurricane strength so far in the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season (Eight named storm though).

You mean New York! No, I meant Boston.
-
This getaway was normal length (a week - 9 days), we've had longer (Alaska was ten days, I think). Sometimes the new airspace etc is a hastle for the controllers so they'd rather take a step back and fly. Some of us (me) are just homesick and want to get back to Boston!

This doesn't seem right: It clearly says I'm logged in at the top (tofutwitch11 - Logout) but says I'm not logged in..
